Local SEO

If You're Not On The Map, You Don't Exist.

For most local searches, the three businesses in Google's map pack get almost all the clicks. Here's what actually gets you one of those three spots.

Search "cafe near me" or "plumber Bondi" and the first thing you see isn't a list of blue links — it's a map with three businesses pinned underneath it. That's the map pack, and for local searches it captures the overwhelming majority of clicks. If you're not in it, you're mostly invisible to anyone searching with genuine, ready-to-act intent.

Why The Map Pack Matters More Than Organic Rankings

Someone searching "near me" isn't researching — they're deciding right now. Ranking well organically still matters, but for local intent searches, map pack visibility is often the difference between getting the call and never being seen at all.

Google Business Profile Setup Essentials

  • Claim and verify your listing if you haven't already — an unclaimed profile is a missed opportunity sitting right there in plain sight.
  • Get your category right. The primary category you choose has a real, direct impact on which searches you show up for.
  • Fill in every section — hours, service area, attributes, description — an incomplete profile is a weaker signal than a complete one.
  • Add real photos regularly. Businesses with recent, genuine photos consistently get more engagement than ones with a single logo image from three years ago.
  • Keep NAP (name, address, phone) exactly consistent with what's on your website and other directories.

Local SEO Ranking Factors (Straight From Google)

Google is fairly open about what drives local ranking, and it comes down to three things: relevance (how well your profile matches what someone searched for), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the location they searched), and prominence (how well-known your business is — reviews, links, general online presence). You can't do much about distance for a given search, which is exactly why the other two — relevance and prominence — are where the real work should go.

Common Mistakes

Watch Out For Stuffing keywords into your business name on Google (against Google's guidelines, and it can get a listing suspended), ignoring reviews entirely, letting your profile sit untouched for months, and having a business address that doesn't match your actual service reality — these quietly undermine everything else you're doing right.

The Honest Timeline

This isn't instant. Meaningful movement in the map pack for a competitive Sydney category typically takes a few months of consistent work, not a few days. That's exactly why consistency beats intensity — a bit of ongoing attention every month outperforms one big push followed by silence.
